Professor Brian Primack, director of the Centre for Research on Media, Technology and Health at the University of Pittsburgh, produced a study last year that showed people who used social media for two hours a day were two to three times as likely to have depression or anxiety as those who logged on for half-an-hour or less.

“There is an association between social media use and mental health issues,” he said. “Some people get the impression that everybody is having a great time and their own lives don’t match up,” said the Professor.

One theory is that people who feel depressed and anxious tend to use more social media. Worse still, another study suggested checking social media 30 minutes before bed results in a 60% rise in disturbed sleep.

My own observations, while simply walking along the Paseo (sea front promenade) here in Las Palmas, is that I have to constantly change direction to avoid folk who aren’t looking where they’re going because they continually have their eyes glued to their smart phones.! Don’t they realize what wonderful views they’re missing – and maybe feeling depressed about it?
