Not Such Good News   Leave a comment

Professor Brian Primack, director of the Centre for Research on Media, Technology and Health at the University of Pittsburgh, produced a study last year that showed people who used social media for two hours a day were two to three times as likely to have depression or anxiety as those who logged on for half-an-hour or less.

“There is an association between social media use and mental health issues,” he said. “Some people get the impression that everybody is having a great time and their own lives don’t match up,” said the Professor.

One theory is that people who feel depressed and anxious tend to use more social media. Worse still, another study suggested checking social media 30 minutes before bed results in a 60% rise in disturbed sleep.

My own observations, while simply walking along the Paseo (sea front promenade) here in Las Palmas, is that I have to constantly change direction to avoid folk who aren’t looking where they’re going because they continually have their eyes glued to their smart phones.! Don’t they realize what wonderful views they’re missing – and maybe feeling depressed about it?

Happy love-making.

Sleep More – Improve Your Love Life   Leave a comment

A study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine discovered if a woman slept for an extra hour, she’d have a 14% higher chance of enjoying a sexual encounter with her lover the next day.

Previous studies have shown lack of sleep releases cortisol – the stress hormone – which reduces testosterone, limiting her sex drive.

Reckon the same rule applies to the fellas, too.

Happy love-making.

Two Week Challenge   Leave a comment

Here’s the challenge: you must have sex every day for two weeks! This is good for you, girls (grown-up girls, that is).

Studies carried out in Israel showed that women who have had two orgasms a week were almost a third less likely to have heart disease. Another study at Queen’s University, Belfast, found that having sex three time a week could slash your heart attack and stroke risk.

It is a super healthy activity. There is now evidence that it improves your cognitive function and appears to ward off dementia.

How about that!

Happy love-making.

Pillow Talk   Leave a comment

A man’s personal levels of testosterone can show in the way he whispers ‘sweet nothings’ in his lover’s ears after making love. Those with high levels tend to be reluctant to indulge in chitchat, and those with lower levels are keener, and better at it.

Researchers for a study led by the University of Connecticut described how post-sex communication may serve ‘an important role in not only sustaining a satisfying sexual relationship between partners, but may also contribute to more general feelings of relationship satisfaction and closeness’.

The possible risks of disclosure include ‘loss of control, embarrassment, hurt or rejection’, the researchers say in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships. The benefits may include ‘increased intimacy, closeness and satisfaction’. The researchers went on to say: ‘Not only does the current study contribute to researchers’ theoretical understanding of sexual communication, privacy boundaries, and biology, but it could also have broader practical implications for romantic relationships.’

But we already knew this, didn’t we? In the chapter entitled The Importance of Communication in my book Exploring Sex, Love and Lust, you’ll find all the answers you need for the perfect sexual relationship – written in an easy-going style, and plain English!

Happy love-making.

The End of another Carnaval   Leave a comment

More than 5,000 people come down to the beach to watch the Sardina floated off and set fire. Then enjoy 20 minutes of spectacular fireworks. Love fills the air, with a lot of ‘Ooooooo-aaaaaaah’.

This is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Is Pornography giving you a Headache?   Leave a comment

An interesting piece of research reported yesterday by neurologists from Taiwan. They said that studying brain scans of a 40 year old married man who regularly looked at internet porn showed activity in areas of the brain normally associated with pain, not sex.

One theory is that in some people, viewing pornography triggers an increase in blood flow to the brain at such levels that it causes pain.

Most of us think about viewing porn for arousal, not a headache. But if you fall into this category at least you know the reason why now.

But if she complains of a headache, what does that make you think?!

Happy love-making.
