Explosive Erections   Leave a comment

We all know that nitric oxide relaxes the spongy blood vessels within the penis, allowing increased blood flow and creating the erection. And we all know that Viagra, first designed to treat angina pectoris (chest pains), was accidentally discovered to increase blood flow to the penis as well.

Well, now doctors at University Hospital, London, have published a study in the Journal of Sexual Medecine, uncovering a remedy designed to treat arthritis (containing nitro glycerin) that when rubbed into the male genitals, had the same effect as Viagra. Better still, it worked up to 12 times faster – only 5 minutes waiting time for some!!

In case you didn’t know it already, nitro glycerin is a highly volatile explosive.

But here’s a warning: Viagra, and other nitric oxide donors such as amyl nitrate (known as “poppers”), are PDE 5 inhibitors and should not be used with nitro glycerin gel or spray; the combined effect of the two types of inhibitors are likely to lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. And, unless you have been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction (ED), neither product is going to benefit you.

ED can be attributed to many causes and hit men at any age, but increasingly beyond the fifties. If you think you might benefit from chemical help, consult your doctor.

Happy love-making.

Worry-Free Orgasms   Leave a comment

Here’s some good news – women do not need to be totally relaxed to enjoy sex.

You don’t need to ‘switch off’ from life to achieve orgasm. The latest study, by Dr Nan Wise, a US neuroscientist, involved ten women experiencing orgasm while their brain activity was followed by MRI scanner. They observed that brain activity in regions responsible for movement, senses, memory and emotions, all gradually increased during the lead-up to orgasm, when activity then peaked and lowered again.

The latest study discovered that the female orgasm is truly ‘mind-blowing’, as it activates the same part of the brain involved in ‘out-of-body experiences.’

Dr Wise, whose research is published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, said of the findings: ‘We found no evidence of deactivation of brain regions during orgasm,’ and went on to say ‘This suggests that the brain does not need to be switched off for a woman to experience orgasm.’

She also said: ‘I don’t believe women have to be worry-free at the time, they just need to focus on the sensation of what is happening. Then this will essentially take over as what they are focusing on.’

Here’s the technical bit: The study, reported in New Scientist magazine, also found a part of the brain, called the dorsal raphe nucleus, becomes more active during orgasm. This is involved with releasing serotonin, which can dampen pain, explaining why women may be less likely to notice being in pain during climax.

Dr Wise said: ‘When you think of it, an out-of-body experience is a state of altered consciousness. And you also get to a point in orgasm where you are taken completely out of yourself.’

So no worries! Just enjoy your love-making.

Best Part of Sex   Leave a comment

Reported this week by the journal PLOS One, is that most people think the best part of sex is the kisses and cuddles, not the act itself.

Researchers in the US asked nearly 2,000 people their thoughts on nearly 50 sexual behaviors and found affectionate and romantic behavior appealed to both men and women.

Happy love-making.

Sexual Infidelity   4 comments

Published in today’s Daily Mail is a double-page article written by my good friend Zelda West-Meads (Relationships Counselor and ‘Agony Aunt’) about females tempted into illicit relationships.
You should read it; interesting examples of using Internet dating sites and how innocent beginnings can grow so easily into adultery, with inevitable family break-ups.

Zelda’s book, To Love, Honour and Betray, is published today by Thistle, and costs only £10.00.

I began this blog by declaring that Zelda West-Meads is my good friend. She will be recommending readers of YOU Magazine, published on Sept 3 by the Mail on Sunday, that they buy my book Exploring Sex, Love and Lust.

What are friends for, if not to help each other out! Good luck with your book Zelda – and loads of interesting stuff to learn, if you might be tempted, dear readers

Brainy People Have Most Sex   Leave a comment

Having sex frequently may help improve brain function as we age. Researchers at Coventry University found over-50s who had the most sex also scored highest in brain tests.
We reckon that the hormones dopamine and oxytocin released during sex improve connectivity between different parts of the brain.
Maybe there’s some truth when your friends say you keep your brains in your trousers!

Stay Positive – Stay Sexy   Leave a comment

A good reason to stay positive as you age:

Researchers at the University of Waterloo in Canada interviewed 1,170 people in their 40s and 70s about their attitudes to ageing and sex, and found that those with less positive views on getting older, enjoyed and desired sex less.

This was reported in The Journal of Sex Research. So, if you want to keep it up right into old age, stay positive!

Happy love-making.
